Gwinnett seeks community members to become student role models

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) seeks volunteer community members who could partner with the school system with offering additional support to its students through the school system’s recently launched Community-Based Mentoring Program, a locally developed initiative designed to serve middle school boys who are at-risk academically and behaviorally. Launched earlier this year, the program recruits and trains community members to become role models and serve the school district by becoming a mentor to a student. An orientation on how to become a mentor will be held at the end of the month on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at the school district’s Instructional Support Center, 437 Old Peachtree Rd. NW in Suwanee. The program begins at 6 p.m.

The Community-Based Mentoring Program identifies students with both an at-school advisor and a mentor in the community. In addition to academics, the program will focus on self-discipline, attendance, behavior, and attitude, as all have an impact on achievement. The adult community mentors will follow a curriculum developed by Gwinnett educators. At a recent orientation in September, 44 volunteers signed up to become mentors. Another 38 community members already are actively having an impact on a student’s life this school year.

Community members interested in becoming a mentor should contact James Rayford , Division of Teaching and Learning by calling 678-301-7321 or Andrew Toney at 770-314-3614.
