Michael Jackson is undoubtedly “The King of Pop” – a cultural icon that has influenced literally hundreds of millions of people across this planet. All of us here at CBS Atlanta, V-103 and WAOK mourn his passing.
It is situations like this that prompt us as a radio station to jump into overdrive. As “The People’s Station” and “The Voice Of The community” we knew that our listeners would be desperate for information and outlets to share their experiences, memories, feelings and emotions. We knew that our community would want to gather as a community to express these emotions.
Due to V-103’s deep relationships in the music industry, the station actually became aware of Michael Jackson’s death before the rumors even started circulating. This allowed us as an organization, to quickly come together yesterday afternoon to begin sharing information with you, our listeners and gathering elements to begin our tribute to The King of Pop.
At 6pm yesterday, the Frank & Wanda Morning Show was back in-studio and on-air taking listener calls, interviewing local and international celebrities about their thoughts and experiences with Michael. By 6:30pm, our websites, www.v-103.com and www.v103webmag.com had tribute sections live. In fact, feel free to visit www.v103webmag.com and click on the home page to view photos, videos, and share your own comments and memories about this amazing performers’ impact on your life. Frank and Wanda remained on-air until 10pm Thursday night and were back on-air again at 6am once again sharing with our listeners. Frank, an audiophile, pulled out exclusive unreleased versions of a number of Michael Jackson songs and played them for our listeners. He also shared a number of Michael Jackson mixes that have been his specialty for decades as a Club DJ.
Numerous celebrities have called in to share their thoughts and experiences regarding Michael including Usher, Akon, Teddy Riley, Tyler Perry, Monica, Al Sharpton, Keith Sweat, Ron Wisener (former manager of Michael Jackson), Raymone Bain (former publicist), Slim (112), Sean Garrett and Anthony Hamilton. The list continues to grow each hour.
Since V-103 is chosen to cover the BET Awards in LA live each year (airing this Sunday), we already had Evening Host Greg Street and Promotions Manager DaDa on site in LA. So, DaDa headed straight to UCLA Medical Center yesterday afternoon to interview members of the large crowd forming to await official word on Michael’s condition. We were able to share the perspective of Australian, Italians visiting the U.S. – every ethnicity and as well as local LA residents and fans with our listeners. Greg Street begins broadcasting live from LA today at 2pm as BET rehearsals kick off and he’ll be certain to have interviews with numerous celebrities sharing their memories.
Keep listening to V-103 and WAOK for music and coverage. Listen live from our websites at www.v-103.com and www.waok.com or on your radio at 103.3FM and 1380AM.
